Smart Dental Academy’s Fire Safety Awareness training course is delivered alongside the
Emergency First Aid at Work Course and is offered complimentary to all Smart Dental Care Clinicians.
The course raises awareness of the dangers associated with fire and the practical steps that
can be taken to minimise and control the risks that fire presents.
The course covers the following topics:
• Incidents involving fire
• Key legislation
• Work activities that could involve fire
• The basic components of fire
• How fire spreads and how this can be prevented
• UK Fire classifications
• Types and safe use of fire extinguishers
• Risk Assessment
• Fire Safety arrangements
The course meets the GDC learning outcomes B and C and awards 1.5 hours variable CPD.

The academy Emergency First Aid at Work course provides candidates with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to deal with emergency situations in the workplace. The course meets the Health and Safety Executive (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 and the latest Resuscitation Council guidelines. Whilst the course is aimed at those working within the dental surgery setting, the knowledge and skills learned, are invaluable and transferable to any situation or setting.
The course meets the GDC learning outcomes B,C and D and awards 3 hours variable CPD.
The course covers the following topics:-
• Understand the role of the first-aider
• The importance of preventing cross infection
• The need for recording incidents and actions
• Use of available equipment
• Emergency drugs
• How to assess the situation in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
• How to deal with anaphylaxic shock
• How to administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (recovery position demonstration)
• How to administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from a seizure
• How to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use of an automated external defibrillator
• How to administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
• How to administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding
• How to administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock
Candidates will be given the opportunity to practice their practical skills on manikins, by performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), dealing with choking and using an automated external defibrillator.
